Throughout the last decade, we have seen popularity increase for console controllers such as the Xbox 360 controller, to be used more and more in any third-person action game or racing title on the PC. And this trend has only grown with the evolution of controllers to become more and more advanced to enhance the gaming experience further.
With now having controllers such as the Xbox One controller, there's the PlayStation 4's Bluetooth-powered DualShock 4. Being able to be used with PC gaming and even Valve has now come up with its innovative controller of its own, named the Steam Controller.
But now this begs the question on. Which one should you choose and what are the best Gaming Controllers For Macbook Pro & Other Laptops. In short, Xbox controllers seem to be more of a plug and play devices; thus they continue to remain the best choose, for those who want a quick set up and avoid headaches.
However, The Steam Controller's extensive customization options and the DualShock 4's are much greater aerodynamical, and ergonomics provide a more comfortable feel to the hands and generally offering more options.
As the Xbox 360 comes as a budget wired model, however, the wireless USB adapter was featured the most popular among players. But as more the more budget choose the wired on has been discontinued only being able to find on online re-sell. Although, as of 2016 the Xbox One controller has become the standard 'Xbox Wireless' connection. Having Bluetooth connectivity makes it useful for laptops and mobile devices.
As for this moment, Bluetooth only has an enhanced version of the controller only allows one controller to be connected at a time. The Steam controller frame and design are vastly similar and probably most like inspired by the Xbox 360 wireless pad in that a single USB dongle can be connected to up to four pads. The dongle comes with the controller.
As for the DualShock 4, it uses Bluetooth connectivity and needs an additional Bluetooth radio or a built-in Bluetooth radio, to use for laptop use. Fortunately, this is included in most present-day laptops either being a dedicated adapter. The advantage of having a DualShock 4 controller is that you will now have the ability to connect, with other Sony-branded mobile devices.
Additionally, You can connect multiple controllers, but this can cause mixed results being that the Bluetooth connection of various device may cause lag or drop-outs. Thus we would suggest using only two reliably, at most.
As previously stated, Microsoft and the Xbox controllers have a good reputation for being very plug and play based. Thus this ability also transferred to the Steam controller also being made and supported by Microsoft, the setup of the controllers is very simple. Once it is connected, you can connect to your computer and powered on.
Then it can be used as a default controller for any game that uses the appropriate APIs. Though Windows 7 and earlier releases also require a driver and manager program, Windows 8 and ten built-in feature drivers. Additionally, the Steam Controller can also work with plug-and-play capacity, though unfortunately to customize these controls for more sensitive inputs requires a Steam account.
Although, Anyone who's likely to buy the Steam Controller probably already has it installed. As for the DualShock 4 controller is has fewer options. And does require the Bluetooth connectivity and the controller has no official drivers for Windows. But although difficult some aftermarket developers. DS4Windows includes both a driver package and a manager app, for instance, and allows users to customize control layouts and set game profiles.

Some Xbox One controller supports Bluetooth wireless connectivity. And easy distinguish between those which have Bluetooth and those who don't is to look at the plastic around the Xbox logo. Is it part of the face of the controller If so, it has Bluetooth. However, If the plastic surrounding the logo matches and leads into the triggers/bumpers, it doesn't support Bluetooth. Connecting with Bluetooth is an easy process.
1. Download DS4Widows – If you choose to your a PS4 Dualshock 4 Controller with your PC it's a pretty simple process. However, it's not quite plugged and play. Cause you will need to install a few pieces of software. What this software is called is DS4Windows, and it connects the PS4 to the controller to your PC with great simplicity.
2. Install Ds4Windows – Once you install the software locate the downloaded Zip file and select 'Extract All' After that a window will appear question, where you would like to extract to the files. You are able to choose the folder in which you downloaded the zip file or choose another folder.

After that a new window will open, then click 'install the DS4 Driver' in order, to enable the use of the PS4 DualShock controller in Windows 8, Windows 8.1, and Windows 10. If you have Windows 7 or older, then you'll need to click on ‘Install 360 Driver' as well.

Then, On Windows 10 devices, click on the speech bubble icon in the Taskbar at the bottom-right corner of your screen. This opens up the Action Center – from there click ‘Bluetooth' and then select ‘Wireless Controller.'
So I've finally gotten around to upgrading my Windows 8.1 OS to Windows 10 on my MacBook Pro (late 2011 model).
All appeared well after the initial setup, with everything responding with the basic checks made (i.e. is the keyboard, touchpad and other basic functions working).
My setup at work varies from the norm. I have my general day-to-day workstation with 3 monitors on my desk. I use my MacBook as a forth monitor. From here I use an application called ‘Mouse without Boarders' which essentially allows me to work off the singular keyboard/mouse (using Microsoft's Sculpt Ergonomic set which is great!) in the office.
Making the assumption (which I know should NEVER do!), I was under the impression that the installation of Windows 10 was a success. Little did I know though, several drivers weren't installed correctly.
As soon as I got home, I connect my laptop to my external monitor + my keyboard/mouse using Bluetooth and attempted to start working away – nothing was happening, no input from my keyboard or mouse. Convert photo to painting software mac.
Reluctantly having to revert to the keyboard/touchpad on the laptop, I went straight to device manager which I should have done immediately after upgrading to Windows 10 – Bluetooth Host Bus Controller had an exclamation mark against, all other drivers were installed successfully.
How to resolve this issue – see below;
SOLUTION –
Prerequisites – USB drive (larger than 2GB in size). USB drive too needs to be in a FAT format.
1. Boot into your Mac OSX partition
2. Open Disk Utility
3. Download Bootcamp drivers for Windows.
4. Boot back into Windows 10
5. Run the setup.exe file off the USB and let it re-run through the driver installation again.
6. Once completed, check to see if device manager to confirm all drivers are installed successfully.
7. Finally, test your Bluetooth devices, ensure that you're able to use them.
Hopefully this helps someone else out there!
Good luck!
Bluetooth has become an important part of our lives. However, it is a reliable technology. It is rare but sometimes you may have Bluetooth problems. Several Mac users have reported that they occasionally encounter a random loss of Bluetooth functionality. Users further have said that the Bluetooth menu displays a 'Bluetooth: Not Available' error (see image below). You may run into problems by establishing a Bluetooth connection or using a Bluetooth accessory. And this will cause your Bluetooth devices and accessories to stop working. And furthermore, several macOS and iOS services (AirDrop, Handoff, Continuity, Universal Clipboard, etc) will not work properly if you are having issues with Bluetooth.
Bluetooth technology lets you wirelessly connect various hardware (keyboard, mouse, trackpad, headset, etc) to your Mac by associating them with your computer (also called pairing). Once paired, your Mac connects to these tools if Bluetooth is working.
This article explains what you can do to troubleshoot when Bluetooth is not working.
Bluetooth settings can be accessed by going to System Preferences > Bluetooth

Please try each step until your issue is resolved. After each step, check to see if Bluetooth is working.
Please also note that performing some of the methods below will cause you to temporarily lose connection to your connected devices (e.g., keyboard, mouse, etc). So you may want to use a wired device.

If you do now see the Bluetooth icon in the menu bar, go to System Preferences > Bluetooth and check the 'Show Bluetooth in menu bar'.
If none of the methods above work, you may want to contact Apple support. You may also want to make a Genius Bar reservation.
